Byron Nelson, of Joplin, Missouri, and his sons, Jordan, 6, and Gerald, 8, pictured here with their Corsair, typify the spirit of the Hat in the Ring program and the potentials of an interest in model building.
Byron tells us: "For a while my wife Danette and I were concerned that
Gerald and Jordan were too involved with models as they seemed to always be
building models, drawing pictures, or reading my magazines and books. Gerald
is almost an encyclopedia of WW2 history. He is only 8 years old but easily
reads at 7th grade level and is a couple of years ahead in math. Jordan is also
much ahead in reading and math development at this age. In my own case building
models forced me to learn and read far ahead of my age level. The math development
came later when I returned to college to realize my lifelong dream of being
a mechanical engineer. The end result of modeling for all of us has been an
interest in reading and math which has had a very positive effect on our future
educational and vocational pursuits."

Hackley School students in Tarrytown, NY were among the first to build rubber-powered kits as part of the Hat in the Ring Youth Aviation Program. Like General Chuck Yeager in the photo backdrop, the boys wear logo shirts from the program. |
